Get In The Water! - Action Portfolio Day

The portfolio day everyone has been waiting for! We are going into the water and photographing some of the best action dog models the East Coast has to offer. We will work on capturing images of dogs running, jumping, doing disc dog tricks, and swimming in the waters of the Chesapeake Bay. We will visit 3 special locations all over Kent Island Maryland throughout the day to photograph dogs at. Get yourself and your camera gear ready because this is a day working along side Michelle Dawkins, world renowned dog photographer who specializes in nothing better than working and photographing dogs in the water.

Things to know and what to bring:

  • Level of experience: Mid to experienced photographers. Must have basic camera knowledge - Adjusting settings in manual mode, understanding ISO, changing white balance settings, etc. I will not be discussing my full camera settings. Only a few key settings will be sent via email the day before so you are ready to photograph the dogs at the crack of dawn.

  • Physical level: Medium. Must be able to walk to the beaches on the bay and be able to work comfortably in the water. I move a lot so be ready to keep up with my wild ways of photographing dogs.

  • Recommended lenses: 70-200mm 2.8, 200mm 2.0, 300mm 2.8. You might be fine with a 135mm lens although I can't advise since it's not one I've used for action.

  • Be prepared to get dirty in the sand and go into the water. To get results like the photos I take, it is a MUST to follow the dogs into the water no matter how deep it gets. I will not bring you in water deeper than waist deep so you still have good movement while working and following the dogs. If you are not staying somewhere over night on Kent Island and have a place to change quickly, I recommend purchasing water waders. It is up to you, if you want to purchase water protective gear if you are concerned about your camera and lens getting wet from the dogs splashing.

  • We will take breaks! After the morning photo session, we will take a break to change, grab coffee, something to eat for breakfast or a light snack at one of the local coffee shops on the water. This is also a good time to go over the photos and discuss the next location and prepare to drive. All locations are no more than 5 -10 minutes apart from one an other. Restrooms are located at every location we will be working at.

  • Morning Coffee, small breakfast, waters, snacks, and special picnic lunch will be provided. We will accommodate your dietary needs and will have many options of foods to choose from.
